Jimdo's Next Chapter

Today is a big day for Jimdo—we closed a €25 million ($28 million) minority investment round led by Spectrum Equity. Spectrum is an investor that specializes in profitable, growth-stage companies with sustainable business models—in other words, companies exactly like ours.

Jimdo's Next Chapter
For more on how we came to this decision and why we’re excited about it, read on.

Why we thought the time was right

Since the three of us founded Jimdo on an old farm in 2007, we have grown it into a solid business. People have created more than 15 million Jimdo websites, we're an international company with offices in Hamburg, San Francisco, and Tokyo, and we are profitable and growing organically out of our own cash flow. We also have an amazing company culture, made possible by 200 team members who come to work every day because they care about our users and about each other. Building Jimdo has been a really fun ride, with all the ups and downs that come with it.

But just as you probably think about how to take your business, organization, or project to the next level, we’re thinking about this, too. A lot. Though we’re really proud of where we are right now, we share a deep feeling that we could be doing much, much more. It’s a feeling we get when we look at our team and know that we can take on the next challenge and climb the next mountain. To us, this was a sign it was time to start considering outside funding.

Finding the right partner

Those of you who have been with us a while may be thinking, “wait, didn’t you once decline funding?” Yes, we did, three years ago. And since then, we’ve always been hesitant to take it. But our perspective gradually changed as we thought about the opportunities funding would enable us to take advantage of and as we got to know the people at Spectrum.

We’ve known Spectrum for four years now and we feel like we’ve met the right partner. Spectrum is excited about Jimdo; not just the product itself but the way we run our business. They know what they’re buying into—Jimdo’s product first, values-driven, and ambitious character. That’s exactly the type of business they’re looking for (and we’re pleased to announce that we are their first investment in Germany).

What’s more, they have a ton of experience helping companies like ours develop and grow, and we are especially impressed by how they do it.

What’s next?

Most importantly, the three of us remain firmly in charge at Jimdo. It’s our goal to keep building a company and brand focused on the long-term. We’ll keep the same approach that we have used ever since we founded Jimdo on the old farm.

There is a lot that the three of us are looking forward to in this new chapter. We can think bigger and do some of the things we’ve been wanting to do for years (in terms of our product and position in the market). And we also feel a renewed sense of momentum, energy, and fun as we come to work every day to see where we can take Jimdo next.

To our users, we want to thank you for your continued support. It’s made Jimdo the sustainable, values-driven company that it is today, and that it will remain in the future.
