The Secret to a Good Online Store? Ask a Jimdo User!

We write a lot about ecommerce on the blog, but the best information comes straight from our customers who are already running successful shops. After featuring some of them last week, we asked them to share some of their ecommerce secrets with us. And they kindly obliged!

What ‘s the #1 piece of advice you would say to someone looking to start an online shop?

Online Shop

  • Sally Oulton of Coastal Vintage

Invest in the time to learn how to take fabulous photos. That is the first thing I did before I set up the store, so I had lovely crisp photos from day one. Product photos against a white background and good light works well for us. And use those photos in social media and link the photos back to your website.

A tip I'd share is the importance of informing your customer base that you offer online shopping in the first place. As a small business, people are often happily surprised that they can look at my products in person at a show and then take their time and shop online from the comfort of their home. Including your website on all of your packaging and business cards is also a must!

  • Sebastian Leskoschek of Black Yeti

Be different. You need to be unique, you need a reason why people should buy from your online shop and not from another shop. Think about what is important to you when you buy something online. Order something online and write down what you like and what you didn’t like about the experience and then apply it to your own site. Customers need to feel safe and secure on your shop. They should know that someone is there to help them if they need it. So you need to provide as much information as possible.

Create or source a product that is proprietary and unique to your market. On our site for example, Dachstein Woolwear is one of the last makers of quality woolen products and their products were not sold in the USA previously. Make it yours and yours only!

  • Hannah George of The Vermont Juice Company

Get accustomed to the options within the Store Item Element (item variations, etc). Knowing all of the in's and out's as you go along is very helpful as you continue to grow your store. Also, make sure to have great pictures and descriptions, a good photo goes a long way in your store listings!

What is the biggest web design tip you can give other online shops creating a site with Jimdo?

Photos, again. Write good product descriptions that are personal and in your own voice.

Note: Follow these tips on the 11 golden rules of writing content for your website.

  • Amy Blair of Sun Ah Blair Jewelry

Photos, photos, photos! Take the time to get excellent shots of your product since people can't touch your items through a screen. Give them every angle, show them your color choices, present them the whole picture. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

With Jimdo you almost have no limits when it comes to designing. Make sure that your whole web design has a similar structure and follows one design. In web design, graphics are a very important topic. People hate reading but they love looking at images, they want information that’s easy to digest. Icons are a huge trend right now and should definitely be included in every website.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with the Jimdo templates. There are so many wonderful ones to choose from and one of them is right for you. We tried out 8 or 9 before settling on our template. Then we used the various listing choices to layout product descriptions and pictures that make it easy for customers to select size, color, and brands. At each step, the Jimdo Support Team was there to help us complete our site.

Be consistent with fonts you use across your site. Whether you use the existing settings within the template, or make your own titles and headers in Photoshop, be consistent on all pages of your site so everything is as cohesive as possible. Getting this all ironed out on our new site made a huge difference!

What advice would you offer online shops trying to increase sales during the holiday season?

Holiday Sale

  • Sally Oulton of Coastal Vintage

Work on your newsletter list and send out regular emails. We send out newsletters twice a month with our latest finds and blog posts. For the holiday period, we send out newsletters with Christmas ideas along with some great photos (and maybe items on sale).

  •

  • Amy Blair of Sun Ah Blair Jewelry

I would recommend hopping on the bandwagon and trying a cyber week sale in conjunction with Small Business Saturday or Cyber Monday. Knowing how and where your product is made is becoming increasingly important to people. So tell your story and give people an incentive to shop online by offering a holiday sale.

One great way to increase sales are holiday discounts. Make your customers feel that they are getting a special deal this time of year when they buy from your shop. You should also get your visitors into the holiday mood—so start decorating your website!

  •

  • Rick Vogt of Sweater Chalet

Try to give discounted or free shipping because almost all your competitors are doing this and customers have come to expect it. Build a little of the shipping cost into your pricing, but don’t be afraid to offer free shipping if the customer purchases above a certain dollar limit. Jimdo has a wonderful shipping module to allow various shipping charges options on product price and weight.
  •

Note: This is how to create discount codes for your online store.

  • Hannah George of The Vermont Juice Company

We tend to make special offers with specific end dates, and that has helped spur sales for that time period. We sell juices, so making special seasonal packages with decent discounts are the kind of specials that we have seen get the most traction. A little advertising on Google and Facebook doesn’t hurt either, just make sure it is targeted to your specific target zip codes.
