How do I connect my own domain with my Jimdo site?
Note: You must have either a JimdoPro or JimdoBusiness site to be able to use your own domain.
Identify Your Domain Registrar
Your domain registrar is the company through which you purchased your domain name (e.g. yourname.com). This may be your previous webhost, or it may be a completely separate company. You will need to contact your registrar to do ONE of the following three options in order to point your domain to your Jimdo website.
Option 1: Change the Nameservers (NS) to Jimdo
Use this option if you are not using subdomains or email addresses from your old registrar, or if you would like to have your email account setup with Jimdo. Please ask your domain registrar to change the nameservers (NS) to Jimdo (or do so yourself if you're familiar with making changes to your domain's DNS).
Change the NS entries for your domain to:
ns1.jimdo.com
ns2.jimdo.com
Please Note: By using Jimdo's nameservers, you will not be able to use a different email provider with this domain, you will only be able to use Jimdo's email solution. If you'd like to use an external email provider, please consider a using Option 2 to connect your domain to your JimdoPage.
Option 2: Change the CNAME Entry in Your DNS
If you are using email addresses and/or other services (e.g. subdomains) through your registrar, ask your registrar to make a "CNAME entry" in your account; or do so yourself in your domain registrar's DNS settings.
Insert the following two entries into your DNS: (example uses the domain name "yourname.com" and the Jimdo account "yourname.jimdo.com")
www.yourname.com CNAME yourname.jimdo.com
Please Note: This will make it so anyone visiting www.yourdomain.com will be taken to your JimdoPage. If visitors going to yourdomain.com (without the www) are not taken to your site, please contact your domain registrar and ask that they redirect the root of your domain to point to the www version of your domain, which should fix that issue.
Option 3: Transfer Your Domain to Jimdo
We can receive transfers of .com, .info, .net, .biz, .de, and .org domains. The following domains are also possible, but additional charges and conditions apply: .fr, .ch, .jp, .eu, and .at.
In order to transfer your domain, follow these steps:
- Get in touch with your current domain registrar, cancel your contract with them, and request that they release your domain for transfer purposes and issue you a Authorization Code, which we need in order to transfer the domain.
- Send the Authorization Code to Jimdo.
- Once we've received the Authorization Code, we will initiate the domain transfer.
- The domain's admin-c (Administrative Contact, usually this is you) will receive a request via email that must be confirmed within five days. If you're not sure whether or not the admin-c email address is yours, please search for your domain in Whois, so you can be certain that the confirmation email will be sent to you.
- Once you have confirmed the request, the same request will be sent to your former domain registrar, who will have to confirm as well. When that is done, the admin-c will receive another confirmation email. Note: The transfer of international domains can take approximately four to ten days.
In some cases, the domain is locked by the domain registrar. If this is the case, you will need to ask the registrar to unlock it before we can start the transfer process. Domains less than 60 days old will not be able to be transferred.
