The Photo Element

The right photo can make a world of difference on your website. Trying to explain California redwoods to someone is a lot harder than, say, showing this picture:

Adding a photo to a page of your website is as easy as one, two, three (and four):

  1. Click on the plus sign, either on the blank page or on the element above where you want the photo to appear.
  2. Click on the "Photo" button to open the photo selector.
  3. Choose the photo you want to upload by clicking on the "Browse" button.
  4. Edit the settings (see below) to change the way your photo appears on the page.

Here's a quick overview of the options you have, from left to right:

Size

If your photo is too large for the site, you can scale it appropriatlely here. The proportions stay the same, but the relative size of the photo decreases. Click on the left-to-right arrows button to maximize the photo.

Alignment

Align your photo on the left, center or right.

Rotate

Use these buttons to flip your photo 90 degrees to the right or left.

Viewable in Full Size

Selecting this option will cause your photo to blow up to full size when it is clicked on your site. Try it on the redwood picture above and see for yourself!

Subtitle

See that line underneath the photo element picture above, the one that reads, "The Photo Element from the inside"? That's the subtitle.

If you're feeling up to it, read on for the advanced options. Otherwise, read the bit about image formats and then skip on down to "Next".

Recommended Format for the Photo Element

When you use the photo element to add a picture to your page, we recommend you crop it to 1280x800 pixels or smaller.

If you don't have image editing software on your computer, there are plenty of options online, for example: picnik.com and aviary.com.

Here's another hint: If you're uploading a picture with fine details or text (especially important for logos!), the "+" and "-" buttons in the photo element can cause photos to become a blurry around the edges. When you look closely at the image of the photo element above, you'll see what we mean. If this bothers you, we suggest you resize the photo ahead of time, either using a desktop program like Photoshop or one of the available online editors.
