For Immediate Release - May 19, 2009
Hamburg/Philadelphia, May 19, 2009 - In July 2008, United Internet (FRA:UTDI) invested in Jimdo, an online website creator based in Hamburg, Germany, taking a 30% stake in the startup. Today, this strategic investment bears fruit as Jimdo launches its first white label implementation: the 1&1 MyBusiness Site for 1&1 Internet Inc., Philadelphia PA, a United Internet subsidiary.
"We are proud to share Jimdo’s unique website creator technology with 1&1," said Matthias Henze, one of Jimdo's co-founders. “United Internet sought out Jimdo because of our easy-to-use and intuitive interface which will furthermore improve customer experience when building professional websites."
Since its founding in February 2007, Jimdo has grown and innovated quickly. Its rapid development first drew the attention of the Samwer brothers, who invested that same year. Jimdo's technical progress also attracted the notice of United Internet. The integration of Jimdo's technology as a white label website creation solution for 1&1 Internet, the world’s largest web hosting company by known servers, is the initial result of this partnership. By working with Jimdo, 1&1 can offer its customers even more cutting-edge web technology. In turn, Jimdo showcases its first white label solution with the world's largest web host.
In addition to the United States, where 1&1 is the fourth largest web hosting company, 1&1 will also offer the 1&1 MyBusiness Site in the United Kingdom, France, and Spain.
Founded on an old farm near Hamburg by three friends, Matthias Henze, Christian Springub, and Fridtjof Detzner, Jimdo has set a course for expansion. The website creator is now available in eight different languages: German, English, Chinese, French, Italian, Russian, and Spanish in the first year. In March 2009, Jimdo announced its exclusive agreement with KDDI Web Communications to offer a Japanese version of Jimdo. Today, there are well over half a million Jimdo sites online.
1&1 Internet Inc. is a subsidiary of United Internet, a profitable public company with a market capitalization of $2 billion. 1&1 was founded in 1988 and hosts more than 10 million domain names, while more than 55,000 servers run on the company's five state-of-the-art data centers. 1&1's global community is over 7.8 million customer contracts strong. The company's U.S. headquarters is located in Chesterbrook, PA. For more information, please contact the company at www.1and1.com or 1-877-461-2631.
Jimdo -- Pages to the People (http://www.jimdo.com) was founded in February 2007 by three young entrepreneurs Christian Springub, Fridtjof Detzner, and Matthias Henze. In 2004, the three founded a company together on an old farmhouse, NorthClick, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jimdo. The web technology that powers Jimdo was first developed for NorthClick's business clients to edit and update their sites more easily, but frequent requests from friends gave the founders the idea to offer free Jimdo Pages. Since then, the website creator has been supported by partners like the Samwer Brothers (alando, jamba) and United Internet (GMX, web.de, 1&1) who have invested in the web startup. In February 2009, the 500,000th Jimdo site went online.
