Static Links for File Downloads

In September of 2008, we updated of our File Download element for JimdoFree users (JimdoPro users were not affected by the change).

Instead of static URLs that you used to get by right-clicking a File Download module, in future you’ll receive temporary links that will expire approximately one hour after their creation. To you this means that all permanent links to file downloads from external sites won’t be possible anymore.

As an example: You’ve stored an MP3 file on a hidden page of your Jimdo site and use it with an <embed> tag on your front page.

This does not work anymore!

Due to high traffic caused by direct links to download files (e.g. MP3 files) we, unfortunately, have had to make this modification. Furthermore, search engines that used to link files directly won't index contents of File Download modules on JimdoFree Pages anymore.

This is a JimdoFree-only restriction and won’t affect JimdoPro users who can keep on using the static file download and will be able to use the File Download function the way they always did.
