Get a good review and bask in the glow of positive marketing\u2014get a bad one and it\u2019s a ding to your reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But regardless of how you feel about Yelp, it appears that the crowd-sourced review site is here to stay. The platform celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and now receives 138 million visitors every month. It\u2019s become the leading business review website, with users\u2014or \u201cYelpers\u201d\u2014contributing 61 million reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not be able to control all of the reviews, but you can make sure you\u2019re presenting your business in the best possible light. This will allow you to update the profile page with relevant, current information and access Yelp\u2019s tools for business owners. If the page doesn\u2019t already exist, you can create one. In the BCG study mentioned above, <strong>only 11% of small businesses had claimed their profiles<\/strong>, so make sure you do this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you create your page, don\u2019t forget to check in periodically to keep your hours and other information up-to-date. Inaccurate or out-of-date information will inevitably frustrate customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Create_a_strong_profile\"><\/span>2. Create a strong profile<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve claimed or created your page, it\u2019s important to create a robust presence. Be sure to list critical information like <strong>business hours, contact information, the link to your website, menus or a list of services, and a 3,000-character description of your business<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An important question to keep in mind is: What would inspire customers to walk through my door? Tell users right away what service your business offers, as well as what qualities or features make you unique compared to competitors in the area. Be sure to also include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/keyword-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">key search terms<\/a> in your profile. Yelp pages frequently appear high up in Google search results, many times even ahead of your actual business website! \u201cThe more information a consumer has when making a buying decision, the better,\u201d said Morgan Remmers, Yelp\u2019s manager of local business outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Photos are especially important for attracting customers.<\/strong> Remmers told me that people searching Yelp business profiles stay on a page with photos two-and-a-half times longer than on a page without. And some business owners believe photos help bring in more customers. \u201cWe have customers who come up to us and say, \u2018I saw this great photo of your pulled pork sandwich or I read this awesome review of your fried chicken sandwich, I\u2019d like one of those,\u2019\u201d Lamon said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Use_the_free_tools\"><\/span>3. Use the free tools<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yelp offers a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/biz.yelp.com\/support\/free_tools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free tools<\/a> that allow you to track and analyze how visitors are engaging with your profile\u2014data that can then help inform your business strategy. For example, the <strong>Activity Feed<\/strong> shows users\u2019 demographics, as well as when they call a business, map directions, or move from Yelp to the business website. The <strong>Revenue Estimate Tool<\/strong> predicts the potential earnings attributed to your Yelp presence. And Yelp offers webinars, how-to videos, and other resources through its support page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Create_a_Yelp_deal\"><\/span>4. Create a Yelp deal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Owners can create coupons or special offers exclusive to Yelpers, known as Yelp Deals. <strong>Some business owners find that deals help increase patronage<\/strong>. You can also set up a <a href=\"http:\/\/officialblog.yelp.com\/2010\/11\/just-in-time-for-black-friday-check-in-offers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check-In Offer<\/a>, where you reward customers with a coupon if they \u201ccheck in\u201d to your business via their mobile device. Visitors can then share check-in offers and deals with their friends via Yelp, Facebook, and Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Make_your_Yelp_presence_known\"><\/span>5. Make your Yelp presence known<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yelp actually discourages owners from asking patrons to leave a review\u2014reviews are only considered authentic and meaningful if they happen organically. That being said, there are still ways to make patrons aware of your Yelp presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remmers recommends displaying a \u201cFind Us on Yelp\u201d sticker on your window or front counter (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/brand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">request one here<\/a>). You can also post an image and link on your website or in your email signature that directs visitors to your Yelp profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Respond_to_reviewers\"><\/span>6. Respond to reviewers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yelp offers two ways for business owners to respond to reviewers\u2014private messaging or publicly replying to reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a dialogue by consistently responding to your reviewers. Private messages\u2014which are much like sending a personal email\u2014are a great way to thank a customer for a positive review or let them know about other services or specials that might appeal to them. You can also private message someone who left a negative review in order to learn more about their experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public responses appear directly below a review. This is your chance to clarify inaccuracies in a review, thank a customer for a positive review, or reply to a negative comment by thanking the customer for the feedback and highlighting improvements you\u2019ve made since his or her visit. Here are a few tips to keep in mind, and this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seerinteractive.com\/blog\/help-with-yelp-for-business-responding-to-negative-reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post from SEER Interactive<\/a> walks through some specific examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Never respond angry:<\/strong> Facing harsh criticism can be tough. Take some time to cool down before responding to a negative review, or have someone else read your proposed response before replying publicly.<\/li><li><strong>Always be diplomatic and polite:<\/strong> Remember that you\u2019re talking to paying customers! Thank the customer for their feedback, and, if applicable, highlight changes you\u2019ve made since his or her visit that could alleviate the concern.<\/li><li><strong>Customize your response:<\/strong> Read each review thoroughly and respond specifically if you can.<\/li><li><strong>Be timely:<\/strong> Don\u2019t let a review languish. Respond within two weeks.<\/li><li><strong>Upload a nice photo:<\/strong> Yelp requires business owners to upload a photo of themselves before messaging a reviewer. Make sure your photograph is clear and inviting&#8211;no sunglasses, shadows, or frowns.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Expand_beyond_Yelp\"><\/span>7. Expand beyond Yelp<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Optimizing your Yelp presence is essential for tapping into the growing community of Yelpers and anyone who finds your business through internet search. <strong>But it\u2019s important to throw many digital \u201chooks\u201d into the water<\/strong> in order to lure in new customers and diversify your online presence. Create a website for your business, where you can provide many more resources and information beyond those allowed in your Yelp profile. You should also stay active in social media, especially on Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Using_Yelp_to_your_advantage\"><\/span>Using Yelp to your advantage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Business owners are understandably hesitant about advertising they can\u2019t control, and reviews on Yelp certainly fit that description.
