Free photo editors similar to Photoshop&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who are they for?<\/strong> Someone who knows a little bit about editing photos already, or is game to figure it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These free alternatives to Photoshop are a great option that many people don\u2019t know about. They can still layer and combine photos, or add or remove someone from a picture, all without Photoshop. The downside? They look and feel very similar to the real deal. So if you hate using Photoshop, go ahead and scroll down to Option 2.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">GIMP (Free)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GIMP<\/strong> is an open source and completely free photo editor that could be Photoshop\u2019s long lost twin. You don\u2019t get a fancy interface, but you do get free access to a very powerful program that can do just about anything you need. You also get lots of tutorials from the community, many languages, and the warm and fuzzy feeling that you are supporting an open-source and volunteer-run project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pixlr (Free)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pixlr<\/strong> is a pretty robust free photo editor that\u2019s actually a web app, so whether you have Windows or a Mac, you don\u2019t need to download any software. You just use it right in your browser. I like that they don\u2019t require you to create an account or jump through hoops to download your images. And when you save an image, it\u2019s very easy to adjust the image size and file size to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/optimize-website-images-for-better-design-seo\/\">optimize it for your website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two free versions: Pixlr X and Pixlr E. Pixlr X is the easiest, most basic. It\u2019s closer to the photo editing software you might find in Windows or iOS. Pixlr E is more advanced. It has layers and tools similar to Photoshop. However with a little digging you\u2019ll see that their blog is actually full of good articles. Google \u201cHow do I ____ in Pixlr?\u201d and a helpful tutorial will likely pop up in the results. Another plus is that the editor is available in almost<a href=\"http:\/\/pixlr.com\/blog\/support\/what-are-my-language-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 30 languages<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Runner up: Fotor<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fotor<\/strong> calls itself \u201cfundamentally Photoshop online\u201d and is available in 8 languages. You can try it for free but you can\u2019t remove the watermark without a Pro plan, which is $8\/mo. I also found the background removal tool difficult to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Online_photo_editors_different_from_Photoshop\"><\/span>2. Online photo editors different from Photoshop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who are they for?<\/strong> Someone who needs to do advanced photo edits, but doesn\u2019t want to use a complicated program like Photoshop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you start looking at Photoshop alternatives, you\u2019ll see that most programs try to copy the Photoshop experience, from layers to lasso tools. If you happen to hate that experience, you\u2019ll want to find a powerful tool with a simple process. That\u2019s where I recommend PicMonkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">PicMonkey ($)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PicMonkey<\/strong> is an easy image editor with a focus on the kinds of edits that people typically want to make, like fixing up someone\u2019s complexion or adding fun effects for different holidays. Best of all, its buttons are labeled in plain English instead of with mysterious icons, and helpful popups tell you exactly how to use each tool. Currently it\u2019s available in English and Spanish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, it\u2019s $8\/mo, so probably only worth it if you know you\u2019re going to use it a lot. If you\u2019re on the fence, consider a free trial to test it out or even just edit one sample photo to see what the tool is like. Similar to other popular graphic design tools, PicMonkey has a ton of templates, fonts, and other fun things for branding and marketing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/Z7p-1cSAspFqTx1pPbyFBcE8tw3sKhCD4kq7Y2R1W5auzJqTulDWJc3L0F9rUd87lK0xQM_vwJMtOzg5s9xj7RUKWIl54AMCunzHLYUKIhwNZMQ81N60xVr1RkKCvpCZvWN4_pB7\" alt=\"A screenshot of the PicMonkey photo editor.\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption><em>PicMonkey has advanced image editing features, plus the ability to add Santa hats. So basically, the full package.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Runner-up: Canva<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Canva<\/strong> is a great graphic design program for beginners. I don\u2019t have it as a top pick here because I find that it\u2019s less of an alternative to Photoshop and more for creating social media-friendly images with text and other graphics. It has a ton of trendy templates for every business-related piece of marketing you\u2019d probably ever need. But its photo editing tools are fairly basic. It\u2019s available for free, but you have to upgrade to the paid plan ($12.95\/mo) to use the background removal tool.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_How_to_remove_an_image_background_without_Photoshop\"><\/span>3. How to remove an image background without Photoshop<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who are they for?<\/strong> Someone who just wants to remove the background from an image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Removing the background of an image<\/strong> is<strong> <\/strong>really handy for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/product-photography-with-diy-light-box\/\"> product photos<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/use-free-website-icons\/\">icons<\/a>. But it\u2019s surprisingly tricky without the Photoshop lasso tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/7DCb94AKJsDMNQmkjTJoOujtIeaKPAd0XZddpCGYKtatnQQunbDyEjdfBZ986MO_4GuU7lN2ubC1fm7LAosGfsJUq6QAAvKZkH2tqO57NRAx_szkzuS6AvF9saiC2pmxbrWx_a_s\" alt=\"An example of removing the background of an image and using it on your website.\"\/><figcaption><em>Who among us hasn&#8217;t wanted to create a clickable button out of our dog&#8217;s head? By removing the background of a photo, uploading it as an image to your website, and then adding a link, now you can!<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most background erasers work the same way. You upload your image and mark the part you want in green and the background in red. Then the software takes over and cuts the image out for you\u2014with varying levels of success depending on how clear the boundaries are between your object and your background. Then you get a chance to touch it up yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pixlr BG (Free)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pixlr.com\/remove-background\/\"><strong>Pixlr BG<\/strong><\/a> wasn\u2019t available the last time I wrote on this topic, but it\u2019s my new favorite free background remover. It\u2019s genuinely free\u2014you don\u2019t need an account and there are no tricks or limitations that you get with other tools. Most importantly, it works really well! Its \u201cAI Cutout\u201d technology worked automatically on the dog photo without me needing to painstakingly trace an outline with my mouse. I just needed to touch it up slightly, and the tool made this process easy and intuitive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/S4P0bpAX1V0UOPPFOFQ7wofEORvEh-zpk1UFOAE1BoFOguIkeB0c2388QpmnSyZBlYasJJxmuW5hdBQxRAsrQblg9rlbdFN6jmXsiPGH_9mk8eRiwOVkJuCuNKF-HbPXUifYUqRK\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption>The Pixlr BG Background Eraser is free and works very well.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Runner up: Background Burner<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first wrote about these programs a few years ago, I recommended <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/burner.bonanza.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Background Burner<\/a>. It still works well and it\u2019s still free. The only catch is that you have to create an account with Bonanza, an online retailer, in order to download your images, and its interface isn\u2019t as nice. They all work the same way but have different pricing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Autoclipping:<\/strong> Pay as you go or get a monthly subscription, depending on how many images you plan on downloading. There\u2019s also a free version for non-commercial use.<\/li><li><strong>ClippingMagic:<\/strong> This tool works really well. The lowest package is $3.99\/mo for 15 credits, which translates to 15 downloaded images. The nice thing is you can re-edit and re-download an image without it counting as another credit.<\/li><li><strong>PicMonkey<\/strong> has a background eraser tool included in their Pro plans ($13\/mo).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_How_to_find_a_professional_photo_editing_service\"><\/span>4. How to find a professional photo editing service<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who are they for?<\/strong> Someone who wants to outsource their photo editing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hey, not all of us are into editing photos. Maybe you have a ton of product photos for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/website\/online-store\/\">online store<\/a>, or you\u2019re trying to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/should-you-outsource-or-do-everything-yourself\/\"> outsource more tasks so you can focus on your top priorities.<\/a> If that\u2019s the case, there are services that will edit your photos for you\u2014from simple edits to more complex effects. Here are some options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pixelz Solo ($)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pixelz<\/strong> is a nice professional option that specializes in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/product-photography-with-diy-light-box\/\">ecommerce photos<\/a>. They\u2019ll help you with backgrounds, make sure everything is cropped consistently, and even provide invisible mannequins. The subscription starts at $9\/mo and then you pay about $1.50 for each image. The turnaround time is 48 hours.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tucia ($)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tucia<\/strong> is one of the largest online photo retouching services. At $8\/image for basic fixes and $40\/image for advanced effects, this could be worth it if you want to turn a photo into a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/best-background-for-your-website\/\"> high-impact website background image<\/a> or if you have a headshot that needs some retouching. You pay per image, so you\u2019re not locked into any monthly subscription.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t be discouraged by Photoshop&#8217;s tricky interface or high price. There are still lots of ways to edit photos for your website. Give some of these options a try, and see what you think!
