You don\u2019t believe in the company&#8217;s goals or values<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the quote in \u201cEat, Pray, Love\u201d about the Sufi philosopher Rumi who asks his students to write down the three things they wanted most in life. If any of the items on the list clash then Rumi warned you are destined for unhappiness. The same can be applied to your values if they\u2019re at odds with your company values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not talking about shady dealings necessarily. If your company culture encourages a competitive, cut-throat work environment that you didn\u2019t sign up for then it\u2019s time to re-evaluate your priorities. Is this culture contributing to your success or hindering it? Would you recommend your employer to a friend?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m going to go into some shameless self-promotion here but the <a href=\"https:\/\/careers.jimdo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">company values<\/a> was one of the reasons I joined Jimdo: the belief that I was contributing in some way to help entrepreneurs realize their dreams. You hate your job<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not talking about a stressful week\u2014we all have those. I mean you really hate your job and everything about it. What do you feel when you wake up on a Monday to go to work? If the answer is somewhere between anger and misery then it\u2019s time to start exploring other options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean outright quitting but you can start looking out for other positions. Subscribe for free to job alerts on Linkedin or Stepstone. Alternatively, if there\u2019s something you always wanted to do like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/start-working-freelance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freelancing<\/a>, blogging or selling your knitted blankets then why not give it a go alongside your job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Your_job_is_affecting_your_social_life\"><\/span>3.&nbsp;Your job is affecting your social life<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your first thought is \u201csocial life?\u201d What\u2019s that again?\u201d then this one\u2019s for you. Think back, when was the last time you saw your friends or family to go to the cinema or did an activity outside of work? Maybe write down how many hours of overtime you\u2019ve done this week or month. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your crazy working hours<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are affecting your work-life balance and leaving you stressed then it\u2019s time to change your game. It\u2019s always good to check in with your supervisor and go through all your tasks with them. Are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/why-virtual-assistant\/\">there tasks that can be automated or given to someone else<\/a>? If you don\u2019t see your situation changing, consider switching your job.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Its_not_fun_anymore\"><\/span>4. It\u2019s not fun anymore<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a great example from a friend of mine who knew that the job wasn\u2019t for her anymore once her new boss banned emojis from being used in their Slack channel&#8230; If you can\u2019t enjoy your work or company environment then it can be a long 8 hours plus 5 days a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re bored at work and aren\u2019t being challenged then you\u2019re not growing in your career. Try asking your supervisor for extra tasks or discuss growing within the company. If you don\u2019t see the situation improving and can\u2019t see any prospects of climbing the ladder then that\u2019s a sure sign to look for something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out what you love doing and start making a change to incorporate this into your work-life, whether it\u2019s a new career or starting your own business. Fear of change can be scary but great. I love this quote by Jim Rohn to motivate me into action when I\u2019m feeling down: \u201cIf you don\u2019t like how things are, change it! You\u2019re not a tree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Youre_just_doing_it_for_the_money\"><\/span>5. You\u2019re just doing it for the money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Money is not a bad reason to have a job. For many people, it\u2019s the main reason. But think about it a different way: are you looking at all your options? Keeping in mind your main motivation: money. Why not gain a lot more money and value from your job by starting your own venture and working for yourself? You may even have fun in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try a small business on the side to test the waters. You fear a career change<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of us aren\u2019t natural risk-takers. We like security and routine but sometimes you have to get out of your comfort zone to find something you really love. If the only reason you\u2019re staying in your job is security then you have to question what your fears of change are. Try writing down your thoughts then offer solutions to tackle them head-on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Business and work coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kerryhannon\/2011\/03\/26\/break-on-through-6-ways-to-conquer-your-fear-of-career-change\/#449339cfeb11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patricia DiVecchio suggests<\/a> \u201cDo one thing different every day that you are afraid to do. Keep track of them in a journal. This practice starts to build your \u2018risk\u2019 muscle.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As DiVecchio mentions \u201cfear can be a great motivator, a great teacher.\u201d So go out there and try something new even if it\u2019s just small steps. If you make a mistake you will learn but if you do nothing then there\u2019s nothing to improve upon or learn. So put your Rupert back in his place and start trusting yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust your gut! If you\u2019re reading this article you probably suspect that the job you\u2019re in isn\u2019t quite right for you. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more people working for themselves maybe it\u2019s time for you too.
