In this article, we\u2019ll show you how to develop and deliver an elevator pitch that\u2019ll sell your business or big idea in under 60 seconds. By the time we\u2019re done, you\u2019ll be primed and ready to present your business confidently in any situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an elevator pitch?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An elevator pitch (or \u201celevator speech\u201d) is a compelling introduction to your business. It\u2019s like a short, snappy, sales pitch that you can deliver in the time it takes you to reach the top floor in an elevator (30-60 seconds). The best bit? It leaves whoever hears it wanting more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ever bumped into your dream client, only to have your mind go completely blank? With a well-thought-out elevator pitch, you\u2019ll always be prepared to impress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you need one?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re an entrepreneur, business owner or just have bags of ambition\u2014the answer is definitely \u201cYes, you need an elevator pitch!\u201d A 30-second elevator pitch gives you the power to sell yourself, your goals, and your big ideas to potential clients and new connections, wherever they appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where and when to use your elevator speech<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No elevator? No problem! You can use your elevator pitch to spark interest in your business in lots of situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When you meet a potential client or business connection.<\/li><li>On your website\u2019s homepage.<\/li><li>At networking events.<\/li><li>At social gatherings.<\/li><li>To help you secure funding or investment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, anytime a potential lead or new relationship appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other ways to use your elevator pitch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In your LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social bios.<\/li><li>When pitching new clients by email.<\/li><li>In your company\u2019s brand guidelines.<\/li><li>Every Thanksgiving when Aunt Urma asks when you\u2019ll be getting a job.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to write an elevator pitch (with templates)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get down to the content of your speech. What information should you include? How long should an elevator pitch be? There\u2019s more than one way to develop a persuasive pitch and everyone\u2019s is different so I\u2019ve included templates and ideas. To get started, just answer a few questions about your business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Who are you?<\/li><li>What do you do?<\/li><li>What problem do your customers face?<\/li><li>How do you help them solve it?<\/li><li>Why is your solution better than those offered by competitors?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Put all your answers together and you\u2019ll have something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hi, I\u2019m Uma Furman, CEO at Fur the Love of Fashion. Most faux-fur is cheap and mass-produced, so it doesn\u2019t look or feel like the real thing. We create synthetic fur for fashion designers who want the luxurious feel of fur without harming animals. Our products are handmade in this country, 100% cruelty-free, and 50% cheaper than the real thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s one of my favorite elevator pitch templates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hi, I\u2019m <strong>(your name)<\/strong>. I run my own business called <strong>(your business name)<\/strong>. Have you ever felt<strong> (negative emotion)<\/strong> because <strong>(problem you solve for your customers)<\/strong>? I help<strong> (your target customers)<\/strong> with <strong>(describe your product or service)<\/strong> so they can <strong>(benefit of your product or service)<\/strong>. Unlike <strong>(your competition)<\/strong>, I offer<strong> (what makes you unique)<\/strong>. Get them hooked.<\/strong> Once you\u2019ve introduced yourself, you only have a tiny window to get your listener (or reader) interested. Many of the best elevator pitches start with or include a surprising fact, statement or statistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: \u201cAt Jimdo, we\u2019ve already built 25 million websites.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Avoid jargon.<\/strong> Steer clear of overly-technical language or industry terms. Keep your tone light and conversational instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Use a comparison.<\/strong> Is your offer brand-new? Comparing it to something that already exists can help you explain its value in fewer words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example: \u201cLinkedIn, it\u2019s like Facebook for business.\u201d or \u201cEtsy, it\u2019s like eBay for handmade crafts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Put some emotion into it. <\/strong>People won\u2019t always remember what you say, but they\u2019ll always remember how you made them feel. Adding an emotional element helps you pull your audience into the story you\u2019re telling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You ask: \u201cEver felt frustrated trying to create a simple website that works well and looks professional?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audience thinks: \u201cOh yeah, it was so infuriating that I gave up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your solution: \u201cWith Jimdo, you can build a beautiful website in minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. End by asking an open question.<\/strong> Something they can\u2019t answer with a \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno.\u201d It\u2019s much easier to remember a conversation you\u2019ve been involved in, rather than something you\u2019ve passively heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, Brett ends with an open question to keep the conversation going:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hi, I\u2019m Brett Erre, CEO at Bretter Balance. Last year, our biggest client reported a 15% drop in sick days and 50% increase in productivity in just 6 weeks. Leaving their teams refreshed and managers free to focus on growth. Unlike our competitors, there\u2019s no contract so you can opt in or out anytime. How do you keep morale high at your company?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Leave them wanting more.<\/strong> Your pitch is like a synopsis\u2014a teaser that makes you want to read the rest of the book. Don\u2019t try to cram too much into your pitch because it\u2019s easy to overwhelm your audience. You can elaborate at your next meeting (see tip 7) or add a link to your website\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/8-steps-to-writing-a-great-about-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">about\u201d page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Close with a call-to-action. <\/strong>A clear&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/create-better-calls-to-action\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">call-to-action<\/a>&nbsp;(CTA) lets your audience know what to do next. Think about your end goal. Do you want the chance to pitch for investment, make a new business connection or interview for your dream job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in-person:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to show you our prototype working if you\u2019re interested. Is there a good day for you next week?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or, on your website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add a CTA button that links to the relevant page like \u201cLearn More,\u201d \u201cOur Products,\u201d or \u201cContact Us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"jimdo-alert\">Your elevator pitch is the start of a conversation. It should be short and to the point. With just enough information to compel the reader or listener to ask a question, take your card or visit your website to find out more.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to use your elevator pitch on your website<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A great elevator pitch is multi-talented and will help you sell your product or skills wherever your prospects are\u2014online, in-person or in print. You can put it on your homepage to grab attention when visitors land on your site, on your \u201cabout\u201d page or anywhere you want to convert visitors into customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples from brands who use versions of their elevator speech online:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Slack<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/intl\/en-gb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on their homepage<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImagine what you\u2019ll accomplish together. Slack is a collaboration hub for work, no matter what work you do. It\u2019s a place where conversations happen, decisions are made and information is always at your fingertips. With Slack, your team is better connected. \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cImagine\u201d drops the reader right into the action, instantly making the pitch relevant to them.<\/li><li>\u201cSlack is a collaboration hub for work\u201d explains what Slack is in just 7 words.<\/li><li>Explains the benefit to the reader then ends on a strong CTA button \u201cGet Started.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bulb<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/bulb.co.uk\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on their \u201cabout\u201d page<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This text appears on Bulb\u2019s \u2018About Us\u2019 page. It\u2019s clear and conversational, you can easily imagine the pair delivering this in-person:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re Hayden and Amit, the founders of Bulb. We met five years ago when we were working in the old energy industry. We saw the same problems at all the big providers. Inefficiency. Poor service. Expensive tariffs. Dirty energy. It didn&#8217;t have to be like this. The energy industry can change \u2013 and we set up Bulb to lead that change. We want to make the whole industry better. And there are three ways we&#8217;re trying to do that &#8211; we&#8217;re making energy simpler, cheaper and greener.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cWe met five years ago when we were working in the old energy industry.\u201d Gives them credibility right away.<\/li><li>\u201cInefficiency. Poor service\u2026\u201d Explains why they\u2019re in business, where their competitors are failing, and how Bulb is different.<\/li><li>The pair end by clearly stating their goals for \u201csimpler, cheaper and greener\u201d energy, which is also their unique selling point (USP). To make this even more effective I\u2019d close on an open question, like, \u201cHow do you feel about green energy?\u201d followed by a call-to-action.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to deliver a confident elevator pitch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Keep it natural.<\/strong> A robotic, corporate speech can put even the keenest audience to sleep. Imagine you\u2019re talking to a friend about your business, keeping your explanations simple and your tone conversational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Practice, practice, practice. <\/strong>The best way to make sure your pitch sounds natural is to know it inside-out. This way, you\u2019ll soak up all the important points and be able to tweak your speech for different scenarios. Video your pitch then play it back to yourself to spot awkward phrasing or overly \u201csalesy\u201d sentences. Practice your pitch aloud with friends and family, try it out at a social gathering, then a local networking event. If you feel comfortable delivering your pitch in a social setting, the chances are it\u2019s genuine, authentic, and not too salesy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Don\u2019t rush.<\/strong> Your elevator pitch should be short enough that you can deliver it in a relaxed manner, in 30-60 seconds. If you\u2019re struggling to do it easily in that time, it\u2019s too long. Go back and check your speech against our templates above to help you weed out any unnecessary sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Start a conversation.<\/strong> No one wants to feel like they\u2019ve been lectured on route to the mailroom. Give your listener the chance to interject or ask a question.
