It helps you see all the pieces before you start putting them together. The most basic site plan can be an outline of your website navigation menu. More detailed ones might detail the content on each page. Think of it like setting out the ingredients on the kitchen counter before you start cooking. It makes the website building process faster and helps make sure you don\u2019t forget anything.<br><br>What format do you use? Brainstorm ideas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a business owner, you already know a lot about your audience and your main message. Now\u2019s the time to consider the details of your website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What kind of information will it have?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What pieces of text do you need? Do you already have it written somewhere, or do you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/checklist-for-clear-readable-website-text\/\">help writing your website text<\/a> from scratch?&nbsp;<\/li><li>What assets do you already have\u2014photos, graphics, anything like that. You can import social media photos directly to your Jimdo site, or put your photos in one folder on your computer so that you can upload them all at once.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Do you have a logo? You can create one for free with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/website\/logo-creator\/\">Jimdo\u2019s Logo Creator<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/free-ways-to-analyze-competitors-website\/\">looking at the websites of your top competitors<\/a> and noting what specific web pages and types of content they are using. Can you see how a visitor is expected to move from one page to another? Do you see things you like and don\u2019t like?<br><br>Write out each idea in a list or on a post-it note so you can see them all at once. You\u2019ll arrange the ideas in the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Cluster your ideas into themes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With all your ideas spread out in front of you, start to group them into different clusters. Every business is unique, but there are some main pieces you\u2019ll probably have:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Home page &#8211; for your main message and recent updates<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/8-steps-to-writing-a-great-about-page\/\">About Page<\/a> &#8211; who you are, what\u2019s your story<\/li><li>A page about your services or products<\/li><li>Examples of your work<\/li><li>A way to contact you<\/li><li>Ideas that you don\u2019t have time to do now, but you\u2019d like to do one day<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/addon\/legal-text-generator\/\">Legal pages<\/a>\/text, privacy policy, Impressum page, etc.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you see a pattern begin to emerge, the clusters can start to form the pages of your site.<br><br>Some ideas might not fit with any others. Are these actually necessary? Do they deserve a standalone page on your website? Set them aside and revisit them during the next step when you make an outline of your website navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Create an outline of website pages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As your clustered content ideas become pages of your site, it&#8217;s time to figure out how to display them in an easy-to-follow format. Keep two basic rules of thumb in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Stick to 5-7 primary pages for your website<\/strong>. (Home, About, Services, Portfolio, etc\u2026) <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Magical_Number_Seven,_Plus_or_Minus_Two\">This is the optimal number that people can easily digest at one time.<\/a> If you need more pages than that, group some pages together into subpages of your primary ones.<br><\/li><li><strong>Make sure that visitors can find what they need in three clicks or less.<\/strong> For example, if a customer has to click three times just to reach a restaurant\u2019s menu, they\u2019re likely to get frustrated and go elsewhere. It\u2019s also possible that a visitor will come to your website via a different page, not your homepage. Fill out the plan with more detail<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>With an outline now in place, make notes under each page to remind yourself of particular materials or information that you want to put there. Maybe one day you want to do instructional videos or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/how-to-write-an-faq-page-with-examples\/\">FAQs<\/a>, but you don\u2019t have them ready now. That\u2019s fine! Refer back to it as you\u2019re building and editing, as it will make the website creation process much quicker and easier.
