The independence, the satisfaction of working for yourself, the dream of building your own thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cut to 2020, and business owners are facing the most challenging times in modern memory. Uncertainty, loss of customers and revenue, and a change in how we all do business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you adapt when the rug is pulled out from under you? In other words, how can you address the feelings of uncertainty, helplessness, and frustration you might have now that you\u2019re trying to run a business in a bizarre new landscape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to talk about these feelings. You don\u2019t want to be perceived as weak or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/overcome-self-doubt\/\">having doubts<\/a>. If you\u2019re trying to lead a team and keep them motivated, you want to maintain a brave face and act like everything is going to be fine. But inside you might be having:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Feelings of powerlessness<\/li><li>Feeling like you\u2019re not up to the task, questioning your own abilities<\/li><li>Feeling like this isn\u2019t what you signed up for<\/li><li>Feelings of regret: \u201cI should have stayed in my old job\u201d<\/li><li>Feelings that you want to quit and try something easier<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Recognize_if_youre_spiraling\"><\/span>Recognize if you\u2019re spiraling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s easy to panic with what-ifs. What if this continues? What if there\u2019s no vaccine? What if we have to close again in the winter? If it helps, write these all down just to get them out of your head.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkspace.com\/blog\/major-life-changes-stay-balanced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in uncertain times, our brains have a negativity bias<\/a>. They are evolved to expect the worst. This makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint, but it can be paralyzing when you need to go to work every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean that you should avoid all negative thoughts. That\u2019s unrealistic and not healthy in its own way. It just means acknowledging them and then putting them to the side.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledge that you are going through huge changes. Acknowledge your disappointment and even grief that these changes are happening. Even just saying to yourself \u201cI am struggling right now to process what\u2019s happening\u201d can take some of the power away from these scary thoughts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Make_a_list_of_what_you_are_good_at\"><\/span>Make a list of what you are good at<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You have not lost any of your talents overnight. Even as the world changes rapidly around you, you still have all of the good qualities that have worked for you in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about successes you have already had and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/thought-leader\/\">how you can apply them to this new, uncertain situation<\/a>. Think of the tools in your toolbox that can help you adapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I am good at thinking creatively and solving problems<\/li><li>I am good at working hard even when I\u2019m not sure<\/li><li>I am good at creative marketing that gets people in the door<\/li><li>I am good at networking and connecting with people<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Remember_what_brought_you_here\"><\/span>Remember what brought you here<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remind yourself why you wanted to do the work you do in the first place. What were the goals you had when you started. Was it to feed your neighbors? Can you still do that? Was it to help people? Can you still do that?<br><br>Try to go deeper than \u201cI wanted to run a successful business\u201d or \u201cI wanted to work for myself.\u201d Think more about why. Something mattered enough for you to strike out on your own in the first place. If you can focus on that, it can be very motivating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Call_a_friend_who_can_remind_you\"><\/span>Call a friend who can remind you<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReach out for support\u201d is one of the most common pieces of advice out there, and one of the hardest to follow when you\u2019re feeling low. But in this case it can really help to call that friend who has known you for a while and tell them exactly what you need. Don\u2019t just expect them to get it. Say, \u201cI\u2019m having a crisis of confidence and I need help remembering that I can do this\u201d or \u201cI need help remembering why I wanted to do this in the first place.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your friend can remind you of what you were like in the days when you started your business, what you wanted and what you were excited about. They can also remind you of qualities you have that you might not even know about.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Take_some_time_off\"><\/span>Take some time off<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not easy to do when you\u2019re stuck in crisis mode. If you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/how-to-work-from-home\/\">working from home<\/a>, it\u2019s hard to remember that just because you\u2019re home doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re somehow on a break. So take a few days off. Turn off the news. Turn off social media. It will all be there when you get back.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your brain has been running on all cylinders for the past few months, and it needs a break. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/debunking-myths-the-mind\/201705\/new-and-deeper-perspective-creativity\">letting your mind \u201cunfocus\u201d for a little while<\/a> is actually a proven way to come up with new, creative ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Think_of_yourself_as_an_explorer\"><\/span>Think of yourself as an explorer&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now you are part of the first wave of businesses and people trying to respond to a problem that no one in modern memory has had to deal with before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no playbook. But that also means you\u2019re not playing by anyone else\u2019s standards or rules about \u201cwhat you should do.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/how-you-too-can-be-self-employed\/\">You are an explorer<\/a>, trying something entirely new and unprecedented.<br><br>If ever there was a time for the creativity, independence, and hard work that got you into self-employment in the first place, this is it.<br><br>This is a chance for you to set an intention about how you want to proceed.
