It\u2019s an online platform where professional people connect, share content, and post job openings. And in my experience, it\u2019s one of the best places to make connections online, keep up with networking while working from home, and raise your profile as a small business owner or freelancer\u2014making it the perfect companion to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/website\/business\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">company website<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/website\/freelance\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">freelancer website<\/a>. Set up your LinkedIn profile<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important elements to your profile are a professional headshot photo (no mirror-selfies, please), a clear headline, and an engaging bio that draws readers in and tells them more about who you are and how you can help. It should be kind of like a personal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/elevator-pitch\/\">elevator pitch<\/a> that gets people interested in you. Start building your network (gradually)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>LinkedIn works in a similar way to Facebook, except you send \u201cconnection\u201d requests instead of friend requests. When you first sign up, LinkedIn will suggest people you might already know\u2014from previous employers to old school chums. Asking to connect with these people is a great way to start networking online because the more connections you have, the more member profiles you\u2019ll be able to see. And if you notice someone that could be a potential client or business ally, they\u2019re more likely to accept if you have a connection in common.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Personalize_every_single_connection_request\"><\/span>3. Personalize every single connection request<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every time you hit \u201cConnect\u201d on LinkedIn you\u2019ll see a popup window appear with the option to \u201cAdd a note.\u201d There are lots of spammers and shameless salespeople on LinkedIn, so this is your chance to stand out from the crowd. Don\u2019t jump right in to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/preparing-sales-talk\/\">sales pitch<\/a>, introduce yourself, try to nod to some common ground (are you from the same neighborhood, do you have a previous colleague in common, or are you in the same sector?), and say why you\u2019d like to have them in your network (do you want to connect with other freelancer graphic designers, did one of their posts make you think, or is your company looking for people with their skill set?). Keep it thoughtful, friendly, and light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-screenshot\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/pyOJFaCAHq1VpYg7tIt24tc7yoIH7j1s4vnztZ7isEKYTsET2trhqeb6Di_OJkp9DXKGWEGOIu1bfSrypnVxyNcddtnvgJTwO8ezP0Z-gw3GlhzKXf2xyVpNRP9_0q4uXKWBGpO6\" alt=\"How to include a note with a LinkedIn invitation request\"\/><figcaption>It&#8217;s always a good idea to include a note with any connection requests.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"jimdo-alert\"><strong>TIP: <\/strong>Don\u2019t spam! If you don\u2019t have a genuine reason to connect with someone, use the \u201cFollow\u201d button instead. This way, you will see that person\u2019s posts in your feed and can engage with their posts naturally, when you have something to contribute. This feels more genuine and gives you a chance to build a rapport without being needy. For more on this, go to Step 5.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_View_profiles_youre_interested_in\"><\/span>4. View profiles you\u2019re interested in<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Viewing someone\u2019s LinkedIn profile is like giving them a smile and a wave in real life. When someone views your profile, you\u2019ll get a notification like this: \u201cJim Beam <strong>viewed your profile<\/strong>.\u201d It\u2019s a good way to start a conversation with fellow freelancers in your niche, business owners in your area, potential customers, or other professionals with skills that you\u2019re looking for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you click on someone\u2019s LinkedIn profile, they\u2019ll get a notification saying you\u2019ve looked at it. If you have a free LinkedIn profile (like most people), you\u2019ll see the five most recent people who\u2019ve viewed your profile. You can upgrade to a paid plan if you want to see more \u201cviewers\u201d but this is definitely not essential!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If there\u2019s someone you want to connect with, I find it\u2019s always polite to view their profile as a way of showing that you\u2019re genuinely interested in what they do. This might be enough to prompt them to view your profile back or even send you a request, or they might do nothing\u2014then you can go to Step 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Follow_follow_follow\"><\/span>5. Follow, follow, follow<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, so you\u2019ve sent connection requests to Billy from accounts and your buddies from high school. But what about the industry leaders you\u2019d really like to connect with but you\u2019ve never met? Successful business owners, mentors, and influencers are likely getting hundreds of requests a day so you\u2019re likely to get a hard \u201cNo\u201d or slip through the cracks entirely. In these cases, the \u201cFollow\u201d button is your friend.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image img-screenshot\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/xzWsWRfbnp5r6lfupQl0KI38ka4M4YBnoPEgem_yYSPEcBawY44T11yKlS9MsUrC5uJwZ52wGtonwKq6hYOY1SCxWhKZrAKn94VbiT6RcVnSQuUYWEuJE6n-13ZZY-eFmQTqAPXW\" alt=\"How to follow someone on LinkedIn\"\/><figcaption>Follow people on LinkedIn who you don&#8217;t know well enough to connect with.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When you land on a profile and click \u201cFollow,\u201d you\u2019ll start seeing all the content this person shares in your LinkedIn feed. It\u2019s like a way to say, \u201cHey, I\u2019m interested in who you are and what you do,\u201d without sending a pre-emptive connection request that\u2019s likely to get rejected. You can also follow companies, so I recommend following your competitors, brands you like, and companies you might one day like to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Read_comment_engage\"><\/span>6. Read, comment, engage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you log in to LinkedIn you\u2019ll see your content feed, just like you would on Facebook and Instagram. You\u2019ll see posts from your connections, brands, and people you follow, plus some sponsored content (advertisements). This is where the real magic happens!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make a habit of reading posts and articles from people you follow and you\u2019ll soon find opportunities to get involved in the conversation. Don\u2019t just comment for the sake of it though\u2014wait till you can say something relevant that brings something new to the conversation or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/thought-leader\/\">offers a different perspective on the topic<\/a>. This will help you get noticed, especially if you can showcase your expertise at the same time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is my favorite way to strike up a conversation with people I\u2019d like to eventually have in my professional network. It might take one comment for them to notice you or it might take months of engagement, but keep at it and send a personalized connection request once you\u2019ve shared a few conversations. This is like the difference between making a \u201ccold call\u201d as a salesperson and visiting a prospect you\u2019ve already crossed paths with. The second feels much more natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_use_LinkedIns_search_function_to_make_connections_and_find_work\"><\/span>How to use LinkedIn\u2019s search function to make connections and find work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With LinkedIn\u2019s search function, you can look up People, Jobs, Content, Companies, Schools, Groups, and Events. All these are useful in their own right but I recommend focusing on People to start with, then moving on to Content, Groups, and Events. In this section, I\u2019ll cover how you can use these search options to find relevant professionals to connect with and job opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>People: search for your ideal connections<\/li><li>Content: find opportunities to engage and connect<\/li><li>Groups: network and share ideas with likeminded people<\/li><li>Events: find virtual networking events<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"People_search_for_your_ideal_connections\"><\/span>People: search for your ideal connections<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As a copywriter and UX writer, I might want to network with other UX professionals in my geographic area (by searching \u201cUX writer\u201d + my hometown). Or, I could find people with complementary skills (by searching \u201cUX designer\u201d or \u201cProduct designer\u201d) with the intention of learning from them, following their career path, and even referring job opportunities to each other down the line.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how well you know the person, you can request to connect with them or use the \u201cFollow\u201d button as described in the steps above. You won\u2019t only find officially listed \u201cjobs\u201d here\u2014those have their own section\u2014but you can find posts from people looking for services and recommendations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Content filter lets you search for keywords in articles, posts, and comments that might be relevant for you. For example, if you\u2019re a florist looking for work in Boston, try searching \u201cLooking for a florist Boston\u201d or \u201cFlorist recommendations Boston\u201d to find anyone that\u2019s posted looking for your services. This strategy takes a bit of time, but it\u2019s a great way to network with potential clients or future employers. Again, you can either engage with the post, request to connect with the person, follow them, or look up their company and get in touch directly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Groups_network_and_share_ideas_with_likeminded_people\"><\/span>Groups: network and share ideas with likeminded people<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like Facebook, LinkedIn has a group for almost every purpose! Some have even moved their events completely online, especially during the recent pandemic, thanks to the huge selection of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/live-streaming-tools\/\"> live video streaming tools<\/a> that are now available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use the \u201cEvents\u201d filter to find out what\u2019s being run by businesses in your local area (so eventually, you might be able to join in-person) or search using keywords that match your industry or niche. The best bit? Lots of them are free to attend so you can boost your skills even while you\u2019re trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/cut-business-costs\/\">cut costs in your business<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Networking on LinkedIn is a great way to build your profile and grow your business along with these other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/linkedin-alternatives\/\">professional networking tools<\/a>\u2014especially if you work remotely or local networking events are thin on the ground. Besides that, running a business can be tough on you emotionally and if you\u2019re going through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/professional-crisis\/\">professional crisis of confidence<\/a> then building your network online can help you ease yourself into networking in real life.
