You\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from being a fringe sector, freelancers generated $1 trillion for the US economy in 2019 (according to Upwork)\u2014that\u2019s a massive 5% of the country\u2019s GDP. This increased by 22% to $1.2 trillion in 2020, as more of us made the shift to self-employment during the coronavirus pandemic, showing that the rise of the freelancer shows no signs of slowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But full-time freelancing isn\u2019t for everyone. So how will you cover your living expenses while you build up your business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Savings. Enough to sustain you for around 3 months (or more), while you look for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This might sound like a lot but without a financial buffer, you\u2019re more likely to be tempted by low-paying gigs that demand lots of work for little money\u2014increasing your risk of burnout before you\u2019ve had a chance to build your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No savings? <\/strong>Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/website\/freelance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">starting your freelance business<\/a> as a side hustle alongside another job. So you\u2019ll need to make sure you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cover all your essential costs, and<\/li><li>Reach your own financial goals.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend calculating your costs first then working backward to get to your \u201cideal\u201d rate. Taking into account how much disposable income you\u2019d like to have, how many hours you want to work, and the going-rate in your industry. Are you a people person?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No boss, no office politics, no awkward morning commute. Freelancing sounds like an introvert\u2019s dream, right? Well, not quite.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re considering freelancing full-time because you hate having a boss, don\u2019t like dealing with people, or hate confrontation, here are some freelance-truths to keep in mind:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Freelancers don\u2019t have \u201cno boss,\u201d they have several<\/strong>\u2014you\u2019ll be reporting to every client, customer, subcontractor, and supplier you work with or who books you for a job.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>You have to build relationships if you want to succeed.<\/strong> While there are lots of ways to get freelance work, building a network is by far the most successful route I&#8217;ve found. You can do this by connecting with fellow freelancers and potential clients at in-personal networking events (check sites like MeetUp for events in your area),\u00a0 \u201cvirtually\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/online-networking-linkedin-guide\/\">LinkedIn<\/a>, or with these other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/linkedin-alternatives\/\">networking options<\/a>. In my freelance career, referrals from other freelancers and word-of-mouth recommendations have been my best source of regular work.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Freelancers have to manage projects from start to finish.<\/strong> This means putting yourself out there and talking to new people, pitching new clients, being able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/preparing-sales-talk\/\">sell your services<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/how-to-ask-for-more-money-as-a-freelancer\/\">negotiating your freelance rates<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/20-online-tools-for-every-freelancer\/\">managing projects<\/a> and people, and resolving conflict when things don\u2019t go to plan. If you want to focus all your time on the work you love and none of this other stuff, then freelancing might not be for you.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If this sounds like your idea of a nightmare, it doesn\u2019t mean you shouldn\u2019t freelance! But you might be better testing the waters with a freelance side-hustle first, or partnering with people who do the tasks you don\u2019t like doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"jimdo-alert\"> <strong>Tip: You don\u2019t have to do everything yourself<\/strong>. In the beginning, there are lots of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/20-online-tools-for-every-freelancer\/\">online tools for freelancers<\/a> you can use to automate routine tasks. Once you build up an income, you might want to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/should-you-outsource-or-do-everything-yourself\/\">outsource tasks<\/a> that aren\u2019t your strong suit (like posting on social media or doing your taxes) to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/why-virtual-assistant\/\">virtual assistant or another professional<\/a>, so you can focus on what you do best.<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Do_you_have_the_right_experience_to_freelance\"><\/span>4. Do you have the right experience to freelance?\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re an independent contractor, the buck stops with you. So when a client commissions you for a project, you should be able to deliver the goods.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every freelancer experiences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/overcome-self-doubt\/\">imposter syndrome<\/a> (feeling like you don\u2019t have the skills or qualifications to do your job) at some point, especially when starting out. So here are some tips on how to evaluate your skills objectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Read job descriptions for similar roles.<\/strong> You might consider yourself equal to an entry-level graphic designer or middle-weight copywriter. Search for these roles on traditional job sites and check out what kind of skills, qualifications, and responsibilities are required at that level. It\u2019s not perfect, but it\u2019s a good way to get a rough idea of where you might fit in the market.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Look at other freelancer websites and portfolios. <\/strong>Search for other freelancers in your area or industry (you might already be connected on LinkedIn) and check out their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/website\/freelance\/\">portfolio websites<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/resume-website-that-employers-love\/\">resume websites<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/pricing-page\/\">pricing pages<\/a>. Try not to compare yourself too harshly to others. Everyone has something different to offer! But if the majority of projects look completely out of your league, then it\u2019s probably worth building up your skills and your confidence in employment first.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you decide to stay in your 9-5 a while longer, don\u2019t give up! Try these tips, then re-evaluate in six months\u2019 time. Say \u201cyes\u201d to any workplace training, read up on the current trends in your industry, or enroll in an online course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Can_you_separate_freelancing_from_your_personal_life\"><\/span>5. Can you separate freelancing from your personal life?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a freelancer, it\u2019s important that you can draw a clear line between business and your personal feelings. This can be tricky, because clients take a chance on you (not a faceless brand) and you, in turn, put a certain amount of trust in them. When someone breaks that trust, it&#8217;s hard not to take it personally.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, when you\u2019re an employee, it\u2019s easy to pass the blame with phrases like, \u201cSorry, it\u2019s the boss\u2019s orders!\u201d or \u201cI would if I could, but it\u2019s out of my hands.\u201d As a freelancer, you have to be prepared to stand up for yourself and your business. This might mean picking up the phone to ask your favorite client why their invoice is two weeks overdue, telling your oldest client that you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/how-to-ask-for-more-money-as-a-freelancer\/\">raising your rates<\/a>, or dealing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com/blog\/deal-with-negative-comments\/\">negative feedback<\/a> about your work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A robust <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jimdo.com\/blog\/freelance-contract-terms\/\">freelancer contract<\/a> will go a way to protecting you and your clients. But there will be still times when you have to be tough about those contract terms\u2014without losing sleep over it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are you ready to make freelancing your career?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We all have our reasons for going freelance. It could be the flexible work hours, more family time, a wider choice of opportunities, or the power to set your own rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freelancing is more than a job\u2014you\u2019ll essentially be running a small business.
