In reality, there are several easy-to-comprehend tools and reference points that make learning SEO both quick and painless. If you can spare a few minutes, I’ll show you how to become fearless about keyword research—one of SEO’s most crucial processes.
First of all, it’s important to understand how to use Google Adwords Keyword Planner, but you shouldn’t let that be your only source of keyword inspiration. In fact, as search engine algorithms become more and more complex, you absolutely must take advantage of all the tools and concepts available to you. If you want to succeed on the web, more often than not you have to be creative. So let’s get started.
Keyword Predictions With Google Autocomplete and Ubersuggest.io
Google’s autocomplete is a powerful tool for Internet marketers of all levels. In essence, Google’s tool shows you high-volume variations of search requests. Say hello to more keyword opportunities for you to target!
The best part about this feature is that the variations, or “predictions” as Google calls them, are based on real user queries that vary depending on language and location. Google will even offer you suggestions for every letter of the alphabet. How cool is that?
But if you don’t feel like running through the ABCs, then check out the free aggregator tool, Ubersuggest. After entering a keyword or phrase, Ubersuggest will give you the most popular variations of your search term, as well as alphabetized predictions. In addition to saving countless hours and thousands of keystrokes, it’s one of the best ways to find new keyword ideas. There’s even a word cloud option that helps you visualize common terms associated with your query.
Popular and Trending With Google Related Searches
Have you noticed the collection of words and phrases at the bottom of a Google search page? Well, you probably guessed it! Those are what Google refers to as their “Related Searches.” It’s similar to the autosuggest feature mentioned above, except that “Related Searches” offer a broader mix of keyword opportunities.
As you can see below, you’ll find modifiers added to the beginning, middle, or end of your original search phrase. You may even find the appropriate acronym for your search if one exists. Either way, you’re bound to discover at least one or two common search phrases that you likely hadn’t thought of before. These results are also based on the most popular or trending searches relevant to your query. So remember, don’t be afraid to let Google’s mountain of search data help you with your keyword research.
Google Trends and a Multidimensional View
Okay, okay. At this point, you must be thinking I have an obsession with Google. And if you were to ask me such a question directly, I’d be inclined to say “yes.” The fact is most SEOs—and nearly every website owner—are currently at the mercy of Google. For me, that’s both good and bad. It’s never ideal to be reliant on one product, but at the same time, we’re fortunate that they offer so many tools to help website owners succeed.
This next Google offering is one that’s indispensable, but often overlooked. Google Trends allows you to see past and present search trends, data, and visualizations. While keyword research may seem one dimensional, Google Trends allows you to analyze search queries with a multidimensional view. Here are a few things Google Trends can help with in terms of keyword research:
- Discover which searches are popular, trending, or declining
- Compare interest levels of multiple sets of keywords
- Sort results by date, location, and language
- Download larger lists of related search queries
Just remember to stay focused on your task at hand. Even though I’ve been using Google Trends for years to help with keyword research, I still find myself performing irrelevant searches like the one above. But knowing that “pizza” continues to trend upwards while “justin bieber” trends downwards makes me feel much better about the world today. Am I right?
Keyword Strategies Built From Your FAQs
For my last keyword research tip, I’d like to steer away from Google and ask you to look closer at your own website. For every product or service that you offer, your customers are going to have questions. But do you know what their frequently asked questions are? If you have a sales or customer support team, they’re a great place to start asking.
- What questions do your customers frequently ask?
- What are the most common pain points?
- What hurdles do you encounter before closing a sale?
Once you’ve gathered a handful of everyday questions or issues, you’ll have a better understanding of some of the important themes you’ll want to address on your website. Let me give you an example of how this worked for Jimdo:
A few years ago, Jimdo users frequently asked for information about website widgets. Some wanted tips on the best photo, video, and audio widgets. Others needed guidance on social media plugins and embeddable surveys. Regardless of the exact need, Jimdo saw the usefulness of adding this information to their website. They first added an impressive list of tools, widgets, and other resources to their Support Center, and then they wrote a more informative post, titled “20 Widgets to Improve Your Website,” for their blog. Since that time, these have been two of the most-visited pages on their Support Center and blog. The blog post even ranks first in Google for dozens of relevant keyword phrases.
So you see, there are quite a few strategies and tools available to everyone that can help with keyword research. There’s no need to be a gifted mathematician or an influential physicist to become knowledgeable about SEO. You simply need to get over any fears, learn more about what’s available, and think creativity. In a lot of ways, it’s very much like building a website. And I know you’ve already succeeded at that!
