Three Free Marketing Tools for Your Website

Engaging customers is the key to nurturing long-term relationships so that they value and remember your company. The simple act of collecting an email address opens doors for marketing, interacting, and upselling, and it means you can get new products right in front of their eyes.

At WebsiteToolTester, we—you guessed it—test a lot of different website tools to see which are the easiest to use, the best value, and give you the best results. Recently a lot of new tools and widgets have come along promising to convert users and increase sign-ups and sales. We’ve tested them all, and here are three of our favorites that are easy to use with your Jimdo website, along with instructions and video tutorials for how to install them. And, best of all, they are free!


1. Create an opt-in pop-up message

Email marketing is one of the simplest and most powerful marketing methods, so a simple newsletter is well worth the investment of time. However, running a newsletter is not enough; you need people to join—and that means encouraging them to opt-in.

Pop-up messages are something of a controversial topic. We’ve all been irritated by a pop-up, yet they do get results. There are some tips we can adhere to in order to get the best from them:

  • Don’t present a pop-up as soon as a visitor enters your site.
  • Present pop-ups at the point of exit to capture the visitor before they go.
  • Don’t present a pop-up to visitors on mobile devices, since your pop-up will fill up their entire screen.

Using SumoMe

SumoMe is a tool that helps you develop effective pop-ups. (There are other tools that work in the same way, but SumoMe is one of our favorites.)

To use SumoMe, you first need to have an account with a mailing list provider (like Mailchimp, Aweber or Getresponse). SumoMe acts as a front-end or funnel for the account, driving signups. Remember that you need to think of your own text to go in the pop-up window (something that will make people want to sign up), as well as the call-to-action (CTA) text for the Submit button.


Create your website



To deploy SumoMe:

  1. Register for a new SumoMe account
  2. Go to the Jimdo administration panel, and click Settings > Website > Edit Head
  3. Copy and paste the SumoMe code into the window
  4. Click Save
  5. From the menu in the top-right corner of your Jimdo website, navigate to SumoMe’s menu
  6. Install the List Builder app
  7. In the List Builder, set up your pop-up integration and content

This is where you can select when your pop-up will appear, how often, and for whom. For example, you can set it so that it just appears to people using desktop devices. Once you have it set up, make sure you test it a few times before your visitors start to use it.


2. Add a welcome bar

A welcome bar is a small strip across the top or bottom of your web page, usually with a short message and a call-to-action button. It’s a handy way to promote marketing campaigns. You can promote a specific page on your site, push a certain product, provide quick updates or encourage newsletter sign-ups.

We’ve used Jimdo with welcome bars from GetSiteControl and SumoMe, but for this example, we’ve chosen AddThis. Just like with the pop-up example before, you’ll need to put thought into the copy for the bar before you start.



To deploy the welcome bar:

  1. Register a new account
  2. Click Tools, then Setup Welcome Bar
  3. Customize the welcome bar
  4. After saving, copy the code AddThis provides
  5. In your Jimdo admin, click Settings > Website > Edit Head, paste in the code and hit Save

AddThis offers different color options and you can also customize the call-to-action button for your welcome bar. Make sure you test different combinations to find out which ones work best with your design.


3. Use a survey

Users love to be asked for their opinion, and GetSiteControl is perfect for automatically triggering a survey, quiz, or poll.

Once you have a GetSiteControl account, spend a little time thinking about meaningful survey questions, or an engaging way to frame your quiz. Keep it short and snappy, and offer an incentive for participation so your recipients make it right through to the end. Discount codes and coupons are great if you’re running an e-commerce store.



To deploy a survey or quiz:

  1. On, click Install
  2. Copy the code provided
  3. In your Jimdo admin, click Settings > Website > Edit Head, paste in the code and hit Save
  4. Back on the GetSiteControl site, click Generate New Widget, and select Survey
  5. Customize the campaign with your questions

Once you start to receive survey results, you’ll understand more about your audience and how to frame your products and services.

Try them out—but don’t overdo it!

Of the three tools we’ve featured, SumoMe and GetSiteControl are our favorites for the range of free features they offer. Next, to their welcome bar, AddThis has some really powerful social sharing features and a nifty content recommendation engine.

As Uncle Ben says in Spiderman, “Remember: With great power comes a great responsibility.” There can be a fine line between engaging users and pestering them, so use these tools sparingly and carefully. But we do recommend that you take them for a spin and see what they can do for your website.
